Omamo was a former Chairperson of the Law Society of Kenya and a leading
legal practitioner in Kenya.
She made history as the first woman to become the Chairperson of the
Law Society of Kenya. Before then, she had been a member of the Council
of the Law Society of Kenya and was actively involved in its activities.
Ms. Omamo was a joint recipient of the award together with the late
Ms. Grace Githu. She was given the award in recognition of her tireless
efforts at protecting the constitution review process. This were apparent
in the various for a where she spoke on the issue. When the continuation
of the process was threatened, Ms. Omamo led a public campaign, The Yellow
Ribbon Campaign, as a protest against moves to halt the review process.
This act was in itself courageous, rooted in principle and inspiring to
all Kenyans, who had indicated their desire to have a new constitution.
