He received the award in 1998. He is a former Member of Parliament for Ugenya Constituency and currently a practicing advocate of the High Court of Kenya. He received the award for crusading for human and civil rights and the observance of the rule of law. He represented victims of human rights abuse. He has sought the application of legal principles to social problems and has exhibited unequalled courage in pursuit of democratic ideals both inside and outside the Kenyan Parliament.
