(i)Human Rights Education The Human Rights Education Programme has the objective of imparting legal and human rights awareness to the Kenyan citizenry. This is currently done through paralegal extension projects based in Laikipia, Taita, Meru and Kitui districts. The programme enhances access to paralegal and legal services for both legal empowerment of rural communities as well as access to justice goals. Paralegal networks of trained activists provide basic legal advisory services as volunteers and are important dispute resolution contacts for uncomplicated cases. The programme is also carrying out a Community Justice Systems study in Wajir, Turkana, Isiolo, Meru North, Nairobi and Laikipia.
(ii) International Cooperation The primary objectives of this programme are to support, preserve and strengthen the legal protection and enforcement of human rights in sub-Saharan Africa under the rule of law; and to focus on strengthening legal institutions and structures that will guarantee impartial and effective protection and enforcement of Human Rights in the long term. This is a joint program of ICJ (K) and ICJ Sweden, which supports national human rights litigation and equal justice projects in 16 African countries in Eastern, Western and Southern Africa.
(iii) Judicial Reform ICJ (K)’s Judiciary programme engages the Kenyan Judiciary in joint implementation of educational, capacity building and reform advocacy projects, with a bias towards constitutionalism, human rights and the rule of law. The overall Judiciary programme’s objective is to ensure that the Judiciary is not only independent, but also effective and accessible as the cornerstone institution for social equity and legal protection of human rights.
(iv) Policy, Research and Advocacy The Policy and Advocacy programme is one of the new programmes created from the new 2001-5 Strategic Plan. The programme targets the development, interpretation and implementation of official policy and endeavours to work with policy makers primarily in government. Our research studies and findings enable us to carry out informed advocacy on matters pertaining to human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
