Cover of the 50th Anniversary Conference ReportICJ Kenya has for the last 50 years, led the movement for democratic change, constitutional, institutional and policy reform in Kenya.

To mark its Golden Jubilee, the ICJ Kenya held an international conference in Mombasa from November 17th-21st 2009 to take stock of its work through the years and pave the way forward for the promotion of human rights in Kenya. After the unprecedented post election violence in 2007and 2008, the Conference presented an ideal platform to address the issues surrounding conflict and transitional justice in Kenya and across Africa. The conference thus took a two-pronged thematic approach; “Options for Transitional Justice in Post Conflict African Societies” and “Torture as a Transitional Justice Issue”.

This report summarises the main points discussed and highlights the key sessions during the Conference. ICJ Kenya is confident that the Conference energised participants to continue their efforts in combating impunity in Africa whilst also promoting freedom, security, democracy and good governance on the continent. We also hope that the Conference participants will continue to interact and build a network for future collaboration.
