Statement on the Brutal murder of David Kato, Ugandan LGBTI activist
The Kenyan section of the International Commission of Jurists would like to extend its deepest heartfelt condolences to the Ugandan Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex community, family and friends of slain David Kato of SMUG for their loss.
David, who was brutally beaten to death in his home on the 26th of January 2011,was a vocal LGBTI rights activist and one of the founders of Sexual Minorities Uganda(SMUG).His death came just after the ruling by the supreme court of Uganda on following a petition by David and other members of SMUG against a Ugandan magazine for incitement of violence and invasion of privacy when the said magazine published articles ‘outing’ LGBTI individuals giving their pictures and address below inciteful captions.
ICJ Kenya calls upon the government and relevant authorities of Uganda to act expeditiously in the investigation into the circumstances of David’s death and bring the perpetrators of his murder to justice.ICJ Kenya also denounces all forms of violence and incitement towards LGBTI and would like to reiterate that Human rights are universal and applicable to every individual regardless of their sexual orientation.
May David’s soul rest in peace.
