Friends pay tribute to TJRC Commissioner Ambassador Berhanu Dinka

TJRC Commissioner Ambassador Berhanu Dinka from Ethiopia who passed away after a long battle with cancer on Monday, was paid tribute by friends as a public official who" exemplified integrity, dignity and good sense."

“Mourning my friend, Ambassador Berhanu Dinka, Colleague and friend at the Kenya TJRC. For the 9 months I served on the Kenya TJRC with Amb Dinka, he exemplified integrity, dignity, and good sense. I will miss him,” said Kaari Betty Murungi, Former Vice-Chair of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission of Kenya through her Tweeter feed.

Murungi further said, “Amb Dinka rejected the last minute alterations-in a dissenting opinion-to sections of Volume 2 of the final TJRC report issued May 21 2013.”

Ambassador Berhanu, was a career diplomat with 27 years in the Ethiopian Foreign Service. He was among international experts appointed to the commission by former President Mwai Kibaki.

The 78 year old Dinka passed away on Monday in New York, USA.

A statement issued by TJRC Chairperson Bethwel Kiplagat stated that the body of the late Dinka will be flown from the US to Ethiopia for burial.

“We have received sad information of the passing on of our brother Commissioner Amb. Berhanu Dinka.  The body will be flown from the United States of America to Ethiopia for burial.  We will keep you informed on the burial arrangements. Let us all keep his family in prayers,” announced TJRC Chairperson, Amb. Bethwel Kiplagat.

“He chaired our report-writing committee, and returned to Kenya – while convalescing – to guide the process to the very end.  He gave the TJRC process his very best,” fellow Commissioners recalled.

Born on 4 June 1935 in the province of Wollega in Ethiopia, Mr. Dinka was educated in Ethiopia and in the United States. He holds degrees in politics and economics.
