Njoki Ndungu, 2006
Njoki Ndungu is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Ndungu, against vehement opposition, spearheaded and pushed for the adoption of the 2006 Sexual Offenses Bill by the Kenyan Parliament, making her a household name. It marked the culmination of over a decade of campaigning on gender concerns, women's and girls' rights, and sexual violence.
Ndungu, who was nominated into the Kenyan parliament in 2003, has consistently spoken out against discrimination and exploitation particularly of young women and girls. She repeatedly mobilized fellow women parliamentarians and civil society to demand better protection against sexual violence for girls, boys and women.
She also served in the Committee of Experts which was charged with the drafting of Kenya's current constitution. She will forever be remembered for her role in giving Kenya a new constitution.
