| Title: Ahraj Newsletter June 2007 Issue
The African Human Rights and Access to Justice (AHRAJ) Initiative is a joint initiative of ICJ-Kenya and ICJ-Sweden supporting strategic human rights litigation in 18 African states with the aim of domesticating international human rights standards in national legal systems through human rights litigation and access to justice support. The expected result is that victims of human rights violations claim and benefit from improved legal protection of their rights and access to justice in accordance with international standards in the thematic areas of women’s rights, labour rights, fair trial, health rights and the right to have access to justice.

The programme held a strategic planning meeting in March 2006 in Nairobi. Participants included ICJ- Sweden members and ICJ-Kenya Council members and AHRAJ staff. The meeting was quite satisfactory and it set the pace for the period 2006-2008.

The Human Rights fraternity in Africa of which the AHRAJ theme groups, litigators and legal experts are part and parcel, is concerned with the developments in Sudan’s Dafur region where there have been reports of ethnic cleansing. According to Reuter’s reports, already 10,000 black Sudanese have been victims of a deliberate terror campaign.
